Tenn. Supreme Court to Decide Alcoa Asbestos Suit

Mesothelioma Attorney: The Tennessee Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday in a case that will decide whether Alcoa Inc. is responsible for the asbestos-related death of a former worker's daughter. The Pittsburgh-based company argues that it should not be held responsible for Amanda Satterfield's cancer.

Satterfield had mesothelioma, a rare cancer directly associated with asbestos exposure. She died in 2005 at the age of 25.

She originally filed suit against the company in 2003, claiming that the asbestos dust her father brought home on his clothes had caused her cancer. Her father, Doug Satterfield, worked hauling asbestos for the company beginning in 1973.

Doug Satterfield has continued the lawsuit as the representative of his daughter's estate. The suit argues that Amanda Satterfield "was exposed to harmful asbestos dust and fibers from the day of her birth from her father's use of asbestos products and inadvertent introduction of dust and fibers into their home and personal environments.''

Alcoa attorney John Lucas argued on Tuesday that the company should not be responsible for the illness of a non-employee.

Mesothelioma Attorney: THE family of a staunch campaigner for a life prolonging cancer drug is calling on the Government to invest more money into vital research. Cora Tiffin lost her husband Arthur to asbestos-related mesothelioma, for which there is no cure.

The 53-year-old grandfather campaigned for anti-cancer drug Alimta to be funded for NHS patients and won his campaign in the North-East before his death in July.

The drug was among those which gave him a precious two years after his terminal diagnosis during which time he saw his son Steve marry and became a grandfather twice over. Now his widow is pushing for more money to be ploughed into research for the condition which she believes is neglected in favour of curable forms of cancer.

"On the whole with mesothelioma, people don't seem to want to find a cure.

First Time Federal Funding for Mesothelioma Research

Mesothelioma Attorney: The Department of Defense (DoD) Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program was appropriated $50 million in the Defense Appropriations Bill that the President signed in mid- November.

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) is excited to announce that, for the first time, mesothelioma will be included as a research priority within the DoD's Medical Research Program, to begin February 2008. As a candidate research area within the program, mesothelioma investigators are eligible to compete for funding through the program's 2008 grant cycle. "The Meso Foundation has been working with fifteen senators, led by Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), advocating the federal government to respond to the mesothelioma crisis through a commitment of new federal research dollars," said Chris Hahn, Executive Director of The Meso Foundation.
