The types of mesothelioma can be divided into main three types according to the place of the affected internal organs; the most common type of this cancer is when the tumors are developed in the pleura 'the outer lining of lungs'. A less common type is the pericardial mesothelioma when the tumors are developed in the pericardium or the sac of the heart and its arteries.

The third mesothelioma type is the peritoneal mesothelioma where the tumors are developed in the peritoneum or the outer lining that surrounds the internal organs of the abdominal cavity. These were the main three types, there is another type that called benign mesothelioma and in this case the tumors that developed are nonmalignant.
