Being More Familiar With Cervical Cancer
Statistics show that women are becoming familiar with the human papilloma virus or the HPV. However, only 20% of them knew that it can lead to cervical cancer when ignored and left unattended. Cancer of the cervix is an abnormal growth of tissues in the cervix causing problems in the reproductive system. Like other types of cancer, it can spread and cause further damage to the body.
The uterine cervix in women can be found in the lowest portion of the uterus. Human papilloma virus causes change in the cervix in a way that it causes abnormal growth of tissues and invasion of the surrounding tissues and organs of the affected area.
The human papilloma virus can be transmitted sexually. However, the use of condom does not guarantee safety as direct contact with the affected area even without sex is a form of virus transmission to one person to another. Moreover, studies show that women who had multiple partners have higher risks of developing cervical cancer that those who have not.
One of the best ways to trace cervical cancer is to have annual check up with your obgyne. Pap smear is advised to be done yearly to check for cancer cells in the cervix. If in such case, abnormalities are discovered, the physician may recommend biopsy to further investigate your health condition.
In some remote areas, visual inspection of the cervix can be an alternative to pap smear on tracing cancer early. This is done by using acetic to highlight precancerous lesions so they can be viewed vividly by the naked eye.
As more studies are being conducted to answer the need for preventive measures of HPV and eliminate the possibility of cervical cancer, HPV vaccine has been developed by pharmaceutical companies. Most popular brand name of HPV vaccine is Gardasil by Merck & Co and Cervarix by GlaxoSmithKline.
This type of cancer does not usually cause pain until the very advanced stages. Some of the symptoms is random vaginal bleeding or abnormal discharge. Some may also complain loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, pelvic pain, back pain and leg pain.
Cervical cancer can be prevented if you have enough knowledge on what it is about and how it can be prevented. Ask your physician which preventive measure can be applicable to you to make sure that you have a healthy body and shield from HPV.
